The title ‘Es verjüngt sich nach unten’ is a German term to describe conical of tapering forms. Scenario: the pianist holds a cigarette in the left hand, head and eyes directed towards the keys, while the right hand plays moving lightly but with great confidence from one melodic tone to the next via strings of appogiaturas, grace notes and the like; in short: incessant doodling. The pulse speeds up when the music moves into a lower register although, from time to time, the rapid pulse units contain very few tones whereas some of the slower units are distinguished by great tonal density. This creates an interplay between the tempi of the melody/main tones and the close-woven tones of the embellishments.
